Hey Beavis, Cucumbers are Cool!

I get tons of email forwards; and while most of them are crap, sometimes I get some pretty cool stuff. My Aunt-In-Law forwarded me a message that lists the many benefits of the cucumber. I’m not exactly sure where this information came from originally, or whether it’s all 100% fact, but I did look up the nutritional information, and it is correct. Anyway, this is some great info, so I feel the need to give the cucumber the “props” it deserves.

Here are some of the health benefits associated with cucumbers:

1.      They contain a host of the vitamins & minerals we need every day, including: Vitamin A, the B vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid, calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium.

2.      The B vitamins can help fight fatigue, and the fiber can be filling so forget about afternoon coffee and processed snacks and munch a cucumber instead.

3.      Eating a few slices of cucumbers before bed is said to provide enough B vitamins, sugar & electrolytes to prevent a hangover if you’ve had too much to drink. **I’ll gladly test this out next time I open a bottle of wine.

4.      The phytochemicals in cucumbers will help kill bacteria that cause bad breath so take a piece of cucumber and hold it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds.

5.      Cucumbers react with collagen to tighten up the skin and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles & cellulite. Rub a few slices on your problem areas.

6.      Cucumbers can help with calming and stress relief – Just boil several slices in a pot of water, and hold your head over the pot. The cucumber steam will smell lovely, and soothe your skin and your senses.

7.      I have used cucumbers to soothe my eyes when they get swollen from allergies, colds or crying too much. The coolness feels good, and I’ve heard they work to decrease the puffiness.

Cucumbers have many household uses as well:

  •  Rubbing a cucumber slice on your bathroom mirror acts as a de-fogger, and smells nice too!
  • A freshly cut cucumber can act as a stand-in for a good shoe shine in a pinch.
  • Cucumbers are great for garden pest control. Apparently, placing a few slices in an aluminum pie plate will cause a reaction that keeps pests (like slugs) away. **I’ll definitely be testing this one soon.
  • Use as a lubricant on a squeaky hinge.
  • Rubbing cucumber slices on faucets, sinks and stainless steel is a great way to remove tarnish and create a lovely streak-free shine.

Three cheers for cucumbers! Hip, hip, hooray!

Are there other ways you use cucumbers?
